Make It a Great Week

As we engineer a re-building at White Cloud Coffee, these thoughts from Dave Hoskin's "Quotes From the Road #169" come to mind…  Thanks to all of you who love our coffee!

"Each morning when I open my eyes I say to myself: I - not events -have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it."

Groucho Marx, 1890-1977: American Comedian

"You find yourself refreshed by the presence of cheerful people. Why not make an honest effort to confer that pleasure on others? Half the battle is gained if you never allow yourself to say anything gloomy."

Julia Child, 1912-2004: Chef, Author and TV Personality

Steve Jobs and White Cloud Coffee

Back in 1985, I bought a Mac Classic, and ever since, I have been one of Apple's fans.

I used that Mac to create the first business plan for White Cloud Coffee.
In fact, over the years, I've brought about 30 people over to the 'light side' from the
PC world (even in the late 90's, when Apple's very existence was in doubt).

Why, because of the great story; Steve Job's focus on superb design, integration of
hardware and software and of course, his great comeback after he left Apple the
first time.

He inspired me to keep persisting, raise the personal bar for good design and
to 'connect the dots' - to use every life experience, good and bad, to do better.

I hope we create a good experience for you, with our coffee and customer care.
A bit of Steve is good for all of us...

Update and Adopt a Soldier

Greetings at the End of August!

Moving into fall - my absolute favorite time here in Boise.
Warm days, cool nights - it is an incredible time of the year.

So, our business is changing.  We are focusing more on our
web and drop-in customers.  Why?  Costs to maintain a

delivery system to grocery accounts keeps getting more
expensive.  And with our coffee in conventional bulk displays,

especially in outlying communities, our coffee can be exposed
to air for too long.  This does not serve our customers well.

And freight - wow!  UPS and FedEx are constantly raising rates.
We have been experimenting with local and regional delivery

carriers.  We have found them to be up to 30% less than the
big boys and girls.

One of our customers, Teri, who owns Mixes from the Heartland,
gave me a wonderful idea today.  As she has extra products,

she donates them to soldiers overseas.  You can 'adopt' a US
soldier at www.adoptaussoldier.org and send care packages

to them.  We plan to do that with our fresh-roasted coffees.
Also, we both have a nice side business with Melaleuca products,

and we will be adding those products to our care packages
as well.  I hope you are inspired to give in your own way.

Let's plan on an incredible September together!

It Never Get Easier Than Now

I had someone ask me this weekend; when is the best time to start a business?
All I could say is, Now!

Life will find ways to get slow you down with distractions.
So… Now is the time.

I want thank Ramit Sethi for today's Title; It Never Get Easier Than Now

Its ok to be fearful, every new business creator is.
Just start with small steps, make a little progress every day, this will keep you 'in the game'.

You can start with the name of your business.
Then, get the URL.

Then start the planning process.  Remember, its not the Plan that is important.
You'll probably revise it, reject it or toss it in a few weeks after starting anyway.

What's important is the Planning!
Its through the planning that you will learn about the market size, the competition,
financing, distribution, margins, design, pricing, sourcing and all the elements you need to
learn about moving a product or service from your brain to the marketplace.

So… Start now, start small, do a little bit every day.
Save yourself from the cubicle life, feel the joy of creating something new.

Call me, email me, text me - tell me how you are doing.
The world is waiting for the wonder of you.

All the Best!  Jerome

“The masters in the art of living make little distinction
between their work and play,  their labor and leisure, their mind and
body,  their information and recreation,  their love and religion.
They hardly know which is which.   They simply pursue their vision of
excellence at whatever they do,  leaving others to decide whether they are
working or playing.   To them,  they are always doing both”.   -   James Michener

All We Need To Know Is That Its Possible

My niece Myja ran her last 3200 meter race as a senior in high school last night.
It was wonderful to watch.

Her 'why' has always been inspired to be her best, to see if she can run just a little bit
faster each time.  She talks about her 'PB' time - personal best - everyone else on the track
helps her to see if she can bring her PB time down.

That's what we need to do every day; just get a little bit better each time.
Win little battles each day, talk to one customer, one neighbor, one vendor; carve a little time out
each day to send five messages (especially the follow-up ones).

This effort will bring successes, prosperity and your legacy.  "All we need to know is that it's possible" - right now, go read this: http://www.aldha.org/ltweight.htm

Challenges... Learning via TED

Greetings from Boise!

While spring is supposed to be here, you would never know it.  Cold and windy, there is still plenty of snow on the ski hills.  Might have to hike to the top this weekend snowboard down.

Do you know about TED?  TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. It started out (in 1984) as a conference bringing together people from three worlds: Technology, Entertainment, Design. All speakers do an 18 minute talk - all their talks are video taped.
Their intent is to share ideas that help change the world.

I want to share two speakers with you; J.K. Rowling, the writer of the Harry Potter series, at the 2008 Harvard Commencement - on the fringe benefits of failure.

The other one is by Roz Savage, who has rowed across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Here she shares the fears of doing something incredible and how she uses that to help change the world.  Here it is: http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/roz_savage_why_i_m_rowing_across_the_pacific.html

Both of these amazing women talk about staying committed to your vision, no matter what the challenges are.  Perseverance will take you there.  Whether your LifeFoods business or raising children or anything else you want to nurture or create, I believe your persistence shows the universe that you mean to get there.

All the Best!

Make it a Great Week

Here are some thoughts I shared with our LifeFoods Marketing Directors.

Maybe some of Will Smith's ideas here will inspire you too…

I hope this finds you ready for a great week!

Thank you for being on the call Thursday eve.  It was wonderful
to have you with us.  Your presence is missed when you are
not there.

We are striving to be remarkable - your ideas and input have
been helping us.  When we fall short, please let us know right
away so we can fix it.  And if we do some things especially well,
let us know that too...

To grow your LifeFoods income, you just need to focus on five
Critical Activities:

1. Grow Your Contact List - nearly every organization needs you
2. Ask for a Conversation - share who you are and how you can help.
3. Present the LifeFoods Solution - help them raise funds for their needs.
4. Follow Up - their fortune, and yours, depends on your perseverance.
5. Give Thanks - with a follow-up note and call.

Will Smith, one of my favorite actors, has had some terrific success.  Here are
some of his thoughts on how to get there.**

1. Be Unrealistic

“What’s the point in being realistic?…Edison wasn’t realistic…”

Nothing great has ever been achieved by a realist. If realist ran the world, we’d be living in dark caves, without any mode of transportation or communication.

What’s the lesson? Be unrealistic; set big hairy audacious goals that even intimidate you. Stretch yourself to your limits, you are capable of much more than you give yourself credit for.

2. Be Single-Minded

“Having a plan B only distracts you from Plan A.”

Focus on your goal to the exclusion of everything else! Broken focus is the number one reason people fail. If your focus is steady, and if you give your efforts toward your greatest strengths, you will experience success.

Single-mindedness is critical!

3. Strive to be Great

“I strive to be like the greatest people who have ever lived.”

Greatness has never been achieved by people who were striving to be average. To be great you must strive for greatness! You must strive to help a great number of people!

4. See it in Your Mind First

“In my mind, I’ve always been an ‘A-list’ Hollywood superstar. Y’all just didn’t know yet.”

If you can’t see it, you can’t have it. You must see it in your mind before it will ever become a reality. You must be convinced of your success. You must live in the new home, drive the new car, and see your amazing spouse in your imagination, before it will ever become a reality.

5. Have Faith

“If it was something that I really committed myself to, I don’t think there’s anything that could stop me from becoming President of the United States.”

You must believe in your ability before anyone else will. You couldn’t successfully run for president, …if you believed that you didn’t deserve to be president. You must have faith in your ability to succeed. You must be the first member of your fan club.

6. Ask “Why Not You?”

“Everybody is ignorant, only on different subjects.”

Most people overestimate other people’s abilities and underestimate their own. Don’t place others on a pedal stool, while you view yourself as insignificant. You must always ask yourself, “Why not me, why not now?”

Is anyone any better than you, …or any more deserving? Sure, we all have our areas of ignorance, but we also have our areas of genius, areas of limitless creativity.

7. Press Forward

“Throughout life people will make you mad, disrespect you and treat you bad. Let God deal with the things they do, because hate in your heart will consume you too.”

Always be willing to forgive and move on, understand that people who criticize you are the ones who need love the most. My father always says, “Hurt people, hurt people.” Press forward whenever you’re confronted with negativity, never let hate enter your thoughts.

In summary, remember to be unrealistic and single-minded, while striving to be great. See what you want in your mind first, have faith, ask why not you, and then press forward!

Moving to Video

Ok, I'm 56 and it's time for video!

I just finished Gary Vaynerchuk's book "Crush It" and I'm all in.
In order to help promote our LifeFoods fundraising system, I spent today
building videos.  Here they are...

Am also adding one for the Business Adventurer - my coaching site.
Gary shares how passion, hustle, tenacity and being yourself (authenticity!)
makes you unique and your own brand.

Marketing on the web is a game-changer.
I think that lots of people are not seeing that yet.

For your business - this is where you need to go, make that, you must go.

All the Best,  Jerome

Creating An Irresistible Offer

100_medium

When selling, how do you create an irresistible offer?

It's not the 'deal' - it's the exchange of energy.  That's where the true value is.  Remember the old "30 minutes or it's free" guarantee by Dominos Pizza?  It became part of the American lexicon.

So... You exchange your money (which you got by exchanging energy (some kind of work or thinking such as writing, stocking shelves, roasting coffee or flying an airplane) for some other kind of value - like pizza.
